How to Apply for AOA Residency Programs

How to Apply for AOA Residency Programs

The American Osteopathic Association or AOA is the primary certifying body for DO’s and oversees 18 certifying boards and is also the accrediting agency for osteopathic medical schools. Beginning in 2015 the AOA will begin to use the same accreditation system as the ACGME. Currently applying for an AOA residency program requires the following steps.

  • Registering with ERAS. ERAS is a system for transmitting all of an applicant’s documents and information to the various residency programs they are applying for. If applying for an osteopathic residency then registration must be done through the osteopathic ERAS
  • Completion of COMLEX-USA Leval 1 and COMLEX-USA level 2 exams
  • AOA match program registration. This is a program that matches residency applicants with AOA residency programs in osteopathic medicine
  • Completion of an osteopathic medical school. Application for a residency program begins at the start of the fourth year of medical school, but medical school must be successfully completed before beginning the residency program.

When researching available programs check on what the match requirements were in previous years and take the time to honestly evaluate yourself. If you fall well below the requirement standards of previous years you may want to consider another program. Moreover, you may learn more about osteopathic residency statement on our site.
